I hope this book will prove to be a valuable source of material which will help fellow trumpet players become acquainted with the standard repertoire of the Big Band.
The book is comprised of many of the most frequently played solos in the Big Band, and Gig Band world. They are the solos which occur regularly. Some may be only a few bars long, and others a couple of pages.
For those who are new to the Big Band world, I've written some brief notes on syncopation, and Swing Quavers (8th notes). Please try to find the original recordings. Some of them are quite inexpensive, and can be found on compilation albums in the better known supermarkets. Others can be watched on You Tube. Amazon and Ebay are also a good source.
The more experienced players will recognise some of the solos immediately as being part of the Gig repertoire. Very often a player will be playing a gig and be expected to play the recorded solo. The qualification for a solo being in the book is that it has to have been played either by me, or someone else in the section on a performance or rehearsal.
Finally, I can't stress enough the importance of listening to the originals. Any notation of a jazz solo can only be approximate. Although I've tried to be as accurate as possible, factors such as vibrato, the style of the period, and the individual style of the soloist have to be studied to some degree to play convincingly. Listen!

Dale's career spans over 40 years, and during that time has demanded various styles, from Symphony Orchestras to Pop.
His love of Big Bands has seen him play lead trumpet for some of the U.K.'s most famous Big Bands including The Syd Lawrence Orchestra, The Glenn Miller Orchestra (UK) and, The Andy Ross Orchestra, where he was a soloist on BBC Television's Come Dancing.
Dale has also toured with visiting artists such as Jack Jones, Johnny Mathis, Shirley Bassey and Howard Keel.
Pop credits include The Stylistics, Gladys Knight, Lisa Stansfield and The Drifters.
An experienced Show player, Dale has also played trumpet in West Side Story, Starlight Express, Grease, High School Musical and Chicago amongst many others.
